Parallel Perspectives, a program developed by Ms. Ellick, provides a process for understanding the past that involves Indigenous community Elders, archaeologists or anthropologists, teachers, and children. Parallel Perspectives provides a process for meshing science and tradition.
Parallel Perspectives uses field experiences and hands-on learning intermingled with interactions with Elders and traditional holders of knowledge to provide students with diverse topics and ideas relating to archaeology and cultural history.
Through Parallel Perspectives, children analyze, compare, and contrast information to develop a personal perspective that recognizes and values alternative explanations. Students gain insights based on traditional perspectives, linking them more strongly with their own cultural heritage. Using Parallel Perspectives, teachers find exciting new ways to teach state mandated educational requirements in mathematics, social studies, and science, and help students connect with their heritage.
